Founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda, Self-Realization Fellowship, a worldwide religious organization with international headquarters in Los Angeles, has been dedicated to carrying on the spiritual and humanitarian work of Paramahansa Yogananda for almost a century.
Self-Realization Fellowship publishes Paramanhansa Yogananda’s writings, lectures, recorded talks, as well as guiding all the temples and over 600 meditation centers located in 60 countries around the world. Their worldwide service seeks to foster a spirit of greater understanding and goodwill among the diverse people and nations of their global family and to help those of all cultures and creeds to realize and express God more fully in their lives as the beauty, mobility, and divinity of the human spirit.
Each year, Self-Realization Fellowship hosts a week-long international Convocation in Los Angeles presenting Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings, meditations, film and video presentations, with guided tours to the ashram centers where he lived and worked. Up to six thousand (6000) devotees from all around the world attend this event meditating and chanting together.
Self-Realization Fellowship presents instruction in the techniques of Kriya yoga taught by Paramahansa Yogananda in a comprehensive home-study series compiled from his lectures and writings. The lessons cover a wide range of topics, offering his inspiring and practical guidance for achieving balanced mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. The Life of Yogananda
In 2014 “AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda”, was directed by Paola di Florio and Lisa Leeman and presented by Counterpoint Films, is a biography filmed over the course of three years with the participation of 30 countries around the world. The film is narrated using Yogananda’s own words and accounts by those who knew him as well as commentary from scientists, journalists, scholars, yogis and devotees. The documentary examines ancient yoga and explores why millions of people today are turning to yoga and focusing their attention inwards seeking self-realization rather than pursuing the limiting material world. The Loft Theatre played AWAKE for the whole month of November in 2014 then played it again on June 21st for the International Day of Yoga in 2015. It can be found as a DVD, and on Documentary lists.
India released a commemorative stamp in honor of Paramahansa Yogananada in 1977 on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Yogananda’s passing in honor of his contributions to the spiritual upliftment of humanity.
In 2017, The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi released the commemorative postage stamp honoring the 100th anniversary of the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, known as Self-Realization Fellowship outside of India, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. Prime Minister Modi appreciated Paramahansa Yogananda for spreading the message of India’s spirituality in foreign lands.
The ideal love for God and service to humanity found full expression in the life of Paramahansa Yogananda. Though the major part of his life was spent outside India, still he takes his place among our great saints. His work continues to grow and shine ever more brightly drawing people everywhere on the path of the pilgrimage of the Spirit.
